What if life doesn’t have to be as hard as you always thought it was?
What if life isn’t just happening to you but rather you are the creator of your own experience?
What if you are not a victim of circumstances, but that they are simply circumstances?
How would you feel knowing you have a choice about how you experience life?…because you do!!
I just started teaching a class called Infinite Possibilities, The Art of Changing Your Life based on the work of Mike Dooley and his book Infinite Possibilities. It is all about living life deliberately—realizing the truth that our thoughts create the things and events of our lives and discovering that the beliefs that we have been carrying around fuel these thoughts.
Have you ever questioned your beliefs or thought about where they come from? Our core beliefs about ourselves and life get programmed into us when we are young children by our parents, our teachers and mentors, our siblings, and then our peer groups and culture. These beliefs are often unconscious—we might not even be aware we are harboring them yet they are generating some powerful thoughts, thoughts we think over and over again.
Are you even aware of the thoughts you are thinking? Many of us go through life with a constant dialog running through our head, and if you stopped and became aware of this dialog—consciously looked at the things you are thinking, or saying to yourself, you might be quite surprised.
Life is hard and it is so unfair. I can’t do it. I’m so fat. I’m old. I never know the right thing to say. I don’t deserve it. I’m not good enough. I’m not worthy. I take terrible pictures. I never get a break.
I could go on and on but you get the gist. And how many of these thoughts are just automatic based on our beliefs that we did not necessarily even choose? It’s a little scary if you think about it.
But the exciting news is—you do have a choice!! Truth is your thoughts are up to you and you can change your underlying beliefs that spark these thoughts if they no longer serve you. How cool is that?!?
Where do you start? You start by being a conscious observer of your thoughts. That’s right—think about what you are thinking about rather than just letting your thoughts run you over all day long. Your thoughts will show you what your beliefs about life and yourself are.
Is it hard to change our beliefs? No, but it does take persistence. Remember, most of our beliefs we have had for a long, long time—they cause a default thinking pattern. So you have to become a super sleuth, investigating and being aware of what you are thinking. It may sound daunting but it is actually quite fun! Again, you might be surprised when you realize the things you are saying about yourself and life once you really pay attention, and you might then say to yourself, Are you f#%king kidding me?? I would never talk to anyone one else like that. That’s when you know you have hit a belief that needs changing and you can take the steps to start thinking new empowering thoughts that support the beliefs that you would like to be living your life from.
You have a choice. You have the power within you. Again, HOW COOL IS THAT?!?
